BSP MP Afzal Ansari loses Lok Sabha seat after conviction | India News



NEW DELHI: BSP MP Afzal Ansari was on Monday disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal case. Ansari, along with his brother and former MLA Mukhtar, were convicted by a MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh. Afzal has been sentenced to four years in jail.
A notification from the Lok Sabha secretariat said: “Consequent upon his conviction, Afzal Ansari, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Ghazipur Parliamentary Constituency of UP, stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. April 29, 2023, in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.” Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lost his Lok Sabha membership after he was convicted by a Surat court in a defamation case and sentenced to two years in jail.
