The incident occurred while PCG vessels were carrying out their duty of escorting ships that were supplying military troops stationed in Ayungin Shoal. This shoal, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, is part of the Spratly Islands chain, which is known as the Nansha Islands in China.
The contested area has been a major source of tension between the Philippines and China, as both nations assert their claims to the strategic waterway.
