A devastating wildfire swept through the historic town of Lahaina on Hawaii’s Maui island on August 9, resulting in at least six fatalities.
The blaze, fueled by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, destroyed over 270 structures and forced thousands to evacuate. Among the casualties was Fleetwood’s on Front St., a popular restaurant owned by Mick Fleetwood.
The fire’s rapid spread was exacerbated by gusts reaching up to 67 mph, causing power outages and hindering firefighting efforts. The main airport in Maui sheltered 2,000 travelers due to flight cancellations.
The wildfire also caused significant damage to Front Street, a tourist hotspot. As the fires continue to rage, officials fear the death toll may rise. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but dry conditions and strong winds have been identified as contributing factors.
