“On behalf of my family members across the country, I pay my heartfelt tribute to all the brave martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre,” PM Modi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
President Murmu also honored the victims of the attack, “My heartfelt tribute to all the freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the motherland in Jallianwala Bagh! The countrymen will always be indebted to all those great souls who sacrificed their lives for Swaraj. I am sure that the spirit of patriotism of those martyrs will always inspire the coming generations.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid his tributes to the victims of the massacre in a post on X.
The Congress leader wrote, “The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is a symbol of the cruelty of an unjust regime which will always be recorded in the black pages of history. I pay my humble tribute to the brave martyrs. Their supreme sacrifice will continue to inspire generations to fight against injustice.”
Hundreds gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, British India, during the annual Baishakhi fair to protest the Rowlatt Acts and the arrests of pro-independence activists Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal. However, without any provocation, British forces, led by temporary brigadier general R. E. H. Dyer, surrounded the crowd with Gurkha and Sikh infantry regiments of the British Indian Army, gunning down hundreds in what became one of the most brutal episodes of their occupation of India.
