Veteran actress Mumtaz is known for her pairing and hit songs with Rajesh Khanna. Right from ‘Roti’, ‘Aapki Kasam’ to ‘Sacha Jutha’ and ‘Do Raaste’. Meanwhile, Khanna’s pairing and on-screen chemistry with Sharmila Tagore is also hard to miss. Who can ever forget, ‘Roop Tera Mastana’, amidst a long list of their emotionally wrenching movies together? Thus, during those times, it was said that Mumtaz and Sharmila Tagore had some rivalry going on.
Mumtaz has opened up on it during a recent interview. The actress told Reddif, “I respect her (Sharmila Tagore) a lot. She is far more educated and sophisticated than me. I started working at the age of eight, so I learned everything on the job. Whether it is Sharmila or any other heroine, I never had time to interact with them.”
She further confessed, “But yes, I did more films with Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) than Sharmilaji. It was god’s blessing that not one film of mine with Kaka flopped. Sharmilaji had flops with him.” Mumtaz also revealed Rajesh Khanna would not like if she signed films with other heroes. “Rajesh Khanna never fueled the rivalry or spoke a word against Sharmilaji. But he would get upset when I signed films with other heroes like Dharmendraji or Devsaab. But he worked with other heroines; I never sulked. He thought he owned me. But never mind, it meant that he cared for me,” said Mumtaz.
Earlier, during a chat with ETimes, Mumtaz had said that heroines cannot be friends. The only ones she was friends with was Saira Banu.
