World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh‘s father, Yograj Singhhas repeatedly targeted former India captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhonialleging that while Kapil sabotaged his career, Dhoni played a role in the exclusion of his son from the Indian team.
YOGRAJ ON KAPIL
The animosity between the two stems from the days when both Yograj and Kapil were trying to build their international careers in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
Ever since his last appearance for India in the only Test match he played in February 1981 against New Zealand in Wellington, Yograj has repeatedly targeted Kapil and made his resentment towards the 1983 World Cup-winning captain public.
Yograj maintains that Kapil’s influence was a key factor in the decision to exclude him from the Indian team.
Besides his only Test appearance, Yograj also played six ODIs for India.
In his latest tirade, Yograj tried to belittle Kapil’s achievements by comparing it to his son Yuvraj’s career.
“The greatest captain of our time, Kapil Dev…I told him, I’ll leave you in a position where the world would curse you. Today, Yuvraj Singh has 13 trophies, and you have only one, the World Cup. End of discussion,” Yograj said.
YOGRAJ ON DHONI
The 66-year-old former India allrounder has always held a grudge against Dhoni, maintaining that it was Dhoni’s decisions during his captaincy days that impacted his son’s career, eventually leading to his exclusion from the Indian team.
Yograj believes that had it not been for Dhoni, Yuvraj would have gone to play for India a lot longer.
Yuvraj, who played a key role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World title wins under Dhoni’s captaincy, retired from all forms of cricket in June 2019.
Yograj blamed Dhoni for Yuvraj’s exclusion from the 2015 ODI World Cup squad and later blamed Dhoni for India’s defeat in the semifinal. In 2019, he again lashed out at Dhoni, holding him responsible for India’s defeat in the World Cup semifinal.
“I won’t forgive MS Dhoni,” Yograj said in his latest comments against the former India skipper.
“He should look at his face in the mirror. He is a very big cricketer, but what he has done against my son, everything is coming out now; it can never be forgiven in life. I have never done two things in life – first, I have never forgiven anybody who has done wrong for me, and second, I have never hugged them in my life, be it my family members or my kids. That man (MS Dhoni) has destroyed the life of my son, who could have played four to five years more,” he said.
